- JAPANESE MEIJI LACQUER RYOSHIBAKO BOXJapanese
JAPANESE MEIJI LACQUER RYOSHIBAKO BOXJapanese Meiji gold lacquered ryoshibako document box, with silver mounts. Decorated with a Japanese garden scene.
Provenance: Gift to Louis W. Hill from Komura Jutaro, a passenger on the Hill's ship "Dakota;" collection of the James J. Hill Reference Library.
Marquess Komura Jutaro (Japanese, 1855-1911) was a Japanese statesman and diplomat. Komura served as Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs until September 1898, when he was named ambassador to Washington, D.C.
Dakota was a steamship built by the Eastern Shipbuilding Company of Groton, Connecticut for the Great Northern Steamship Company owned by railroad magnate James J. Hill to enhance and promote trade between the United States and Japan. In 1904 the Great Northern Railway made an effort to facilitate trade with Asia, particularly with Japan and China, by entering into shipping business, and as a part of this endeavor two great steamers of approximately 20,000 GRT were ordered. Dakota was the second of these vessels, and was laid down at the Eastern Shipbuilding Company's yard at Groton, and launched on February 6, 1904 (yard number 2), with Miss Mary Bell Flemington of Ellendale being the sponsor. The ceremony was attended by nearly 5,000 people, including the governor of Connecticut Abiram Chamberlain, ex-governor Thomas Waller, James J. Hill, president of the Great Northern Steamship Company, many members of the board of trade from Minnesota and North and South Dakota, senators Hansborough and McCumber of North Dakota among others. At the time, she and her sister-ship Minnesota were described as the largest ships ever built in America. Certain individuals are prohibited by law to purchase items in this auction. Descendants of James J. Hill within three generations (Great Grandchildren and closer) are not allowed to purchase items. - WWII US NAVY SHIP'S BELL MARKED U.S.N,
WWII US NAVY SHIP'S BELL MARKED U.S.N, 1941-1945Featured in this lot is a Solid brass U.S.N marked U. S. Navy ship's bell with original brass clapper with braided rope handle. Bells have a centuries-long tradition of varied use in the navies and merchant fleets of the world. Signaling, keeping time, and sounding alarms are important in a ship's routine and readiness. Their functional and ceremonial uses have made them a symbol of considerable significance to the United States Navy. Prior to 1900, bell designs were ornate with no standard specifications which were introduced during the WW I era that included 5-6 circumference bands. The interwar period from 1930 to 1940 saw shape and design variations again including the decrease of circumference bands to 2-4. From 1941-1945, a uniform shape without circumference bands became standard issue. The tone of all Navy bells varies with their size. A bell of this size is A flat; the largest Navy bell is B flat. Navy bells are classed by the size of the vessel for the primary bell which would be the largest on board. Larger bells have the ship’s name and cannot be legally sold unless obtained by the first owner in a bona fide surplus sale. A wonderful piece of US Navy history. This US Navy bell is in very well preserved condition overall, scratches and oxidation are exhibited throughout from normal wear, a rich patina noted as well. Measures approximately 10" x 10."
